Opal Minded is the only opal store in Sydney, and in the world, with a comprehensive collection of outstanding in quality and variety opals from opal fields of Jundah, in the South-West of Australia’s Queensland.

Jundah opal mines are situated in the opal mining area historically known as Opalville, which is reputed for being the toughest in Australia and also for producing some of the most beautiful opals ever found, including the lavish “Galaxy”.

Jundah-Opalville is unique in that it produces not just one, but all types of different opals found in Australia, that is black opals, boulder opals, light opals and crystal pipe opals. Jundah opal mines were also the first black opal mines.

Jundah opals are known for their infinitely alluring colour play. Unlike with many others, their luminosity is so splendid that they can glow and mesmerise even with very little light present.

At the turn of the 19^th century, around 600 opal miners worked in Opalville in extreme conditions, lacking in water and other sustenance, in hope of sharing in the excitement of uncovering opals that have been the benchmark for the opal industry ever since.

The splendour of Jundah opals was the reason why John Bernard, the founder and director of Opal Minded, decided to focus Opal Minded’s opal mining operations there, undeterred by the lonely nature of his pursuits.

John operates Jundah opal mines personally, sometimes in tandem with his brother, continuing the over half-a-century old family opal mining tradition.
